Questions to Ask When Deciding on a Vacuum

by jeff clemens

Need a new vacuum? Be sure to ask yourself these 4 questions when deciding which is best for your needs.

#1| What will you be cleaning?

From floors and stairs to furniture, curtains, blinds and more, contemporary vacuums can help you clean a wide variety of surfaces and items. But it’s important to consider these factors because certain vacuum cleaners are better suited for certain applications than others.

For example, upright vacuums are great for most large spaces, but may not be the best choice if your home has multiple staircases as it is generally the heaviest category and can be cumbersome on tall staircases. A canister vacuum is more nimble and may work out better for you in that application.

Some vacuums are better on certain surfaces than others. If your home is mostly carpet, for example, you likely wouldn’t want a vacuum designed for cleaning hardwood floors. Likewise, you would probably benefit from a model that includes hoses, attachments and other accessories if you want to clean multiple surfaces, furniture and other items.

#2| What is the size and shape of the area you’ll be cleaning?

It is important to consider both the size and shape of your spaces when choosing a vacuum cleaner. For example, some vacuum cleaners designed for large rooms and spaces are not as nimble, which may result in difficulties cleaning corners, tight spaces or areas with awkward obstructions. Likewise, some of the more nimble vacuum cleaners are designed for quick cleaning and small spaces and may not be effective as the primary vacuum for an entire home.

Finding the right balance is key.

#3| How often do you intend to vacuum?

This is a great thing to consider when choosing a vacuum. If you want to vacuum often, you’ll likely be interested in a robot vacuum or a vacuum cleaner that is light, easy to access, easy to maneuver and easy to store. If you don’t want to vacuum as often, you’ll likely be more interested in what can provide the deepest, longest-lasting cleaning.

This is the area where we find most customers fall into both camps. They want to get a deep cleaning a couple times a month, but need a solution for quick clean-ups in between. Where budget allows, this can be a factor that causes you to consider a multiple vacuum cleaner solution that includes one high-powered option to use for big cleans and either a stick or a robot vacuum cleaner to use for intermittent cleaning.

#4| Do you have pets or allergies in your home?

OK, these are technically two questions, but they go hand in hand as they both relate to whether or not filtration and containment of dust and debris will be a big factor for you in finding the best vacuum cleaner for your application. Many vacuum cleaners have advanced filtration and containment systems that are designed specifically for pet owners and allergy sufferers. For example, Miele’s Cat & Dog series is designed specifically for a home with pets.
